There were no helpful answers to the other questions I saw relating to flashing screens.

This printer is maybe 1 or 2 years old - yesterday it flashed blue screen with the error message B83B64EC.  Today it flashed a blank white screen.

Pressing the power button twice restarts the printer and it functions fine after that.

Please let me know if I need to get the thing serviced or if I should just trash it and start over. It was a BEAR to get working with the computer and has given us problems since the beginning - such as Macbooks needing to repeatedly install the driver to use it.

Thanks -

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

If you are finding it difficult to update the firmware from printer display, you can even update it from computer.

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer, either through your local network or a USB cable.

  2. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then enter your printer model number.

  3. Select your operating system if required.

  4. Click Firmware, and then click Download.

If a Firmware section is not listed, an update is not currently available for your printer.

  5. Click Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended), click Next, and then click Install now.

  6. When the HP Printer Update window opens, see if the printer serial number displays.

    • If the serial number displays, select the checkbox next to it, and then click Update.

    • If the serial number displays but the status is 'not applicable' (grayed out), you do not need to complete the firmware update. Click Cancel.

    • If the serial number does not display and your printer uses a network connection, connect a USB cable to the printer and computer, wait 20 seconds, and then click Refresh. When the serial number displays, select the checkbox next to it, and then click Update.

  7. When the update completes, click OK.

  8. If you connected a USB cable to update your network printer, remove the USB driver installed by Windows.

    1. Search Windows for Devices and Printers, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.

    2. Right-click the USB printer device that matches your printer model, and then select Remove Device.

    3. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer, and then restart the computer.

If the issue persists, this issue may require one to one interaction with the HP Phone Support.

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums After reading your post I see that you are getting error message B83B64EC on the printer. I will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. 🙂  Kudos to you on that score.:)

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • When did this issue start?
  • Did you do any changes to the printer?

Meanwhile

Reset the printer

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

       NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Update the printer firmware

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  3. Touch Update the Printer, and then touch Check for Printer Updates Now.

       NOTE:

To enable the printer to automatically check for updates, touch Printer Update Options, and then make sure Install Automatically (Recommended) is selected.

  4. Wait while the printer checks for any available updates.

    • If the printer finds an update, the update installs automatically. The printer might turn off and on depending on the type of update being installed.

    • If the printer does not find an update, the printer returns to the Home screen.

Reply with the result of the above-mentioned steps, for further assistance.

Cheers.

Thanks - I haven't had a chance to try it yet - it flashed again today after someone printed and then it sat awhile.  I will try it on Monday and let you know!

My printer maintenance section just lists clean printhead, align printehead, and restore. I did select update print apps from the dashboard, but don't know if that's the same thing you are suggesting or not.

Same problem as previous user; printer freezes and then shows blue screen with error message 068CC413.

Previously, screen had reported cartridge error or damage, despite the fact that these were HP cartridges which were replaced a short time ago (over two months).

Tred restarting printer, disconnecting printer from wall socket, pressing start button while disconnected to discharge residual energy, reconnecting, but blue screen restarts

Have held down on button for short period and HP logo comes on for two seconds and then USB light flashes together with three white buttons on the control screen, which are frozen.

On reconnection, blue screen  simply comes back on with same message. Seems to be stuck in this phase,

Seems to be cheaper and quicker to simply buy a new product (probably a Brother, as I have these at home) not HP this time

@PW1955, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

If the printer is stuck at the error and if you are not able to bypass it, firmware cannot be updated on the printer.

Check for any paper jams and if the print carriage is moving freely inside the printer.

Refer to the steps mentioned in this document.

Let me know how this goes.
