C7280 Duplex Printing

It's not a Vista problem as I'm using it with 3 x XP PCs and one Vista.  All exhibit the same invalid error message, but duplexing DOES work.

It is quite true you can make it work.  It is also true it is a HP problem which they either can't or won't fix.  The best way to treat HP at this point is not to purchase there equipment until they start to put there customers first.  If you have one of the problem printers return it and get your money back.  There are other solutions out there.

The rest of the spec on this printer is exactly what I want.  Fortunately, I can print multiple multi-page documents serially on my L7780, so the error message on the 7280 is less of a problem for me.  However, I do agree that HP really should resolve this irritating niggle as it must be impacting sales.  My local store certainly changed their info card for the printer when I told them of the problem.

I just discovered the same issue. Here’s a hokey work around to the duplexer not installed popup annoyance. After you have set up the printer for network use then plug in the USB cable and create a new printer. Once you have the USB printer setup enter the printer properties click the Ports tab then select the same tcp/ip port used for your networked printer setup click OK. Set it as the default printer.

Now don’t delete the original network setup printer just rename it because it will be need by the HP Digital Imaging Monitor it’s the tool that sits in the tray, you know the icon with a green dot and checkmark in it. The tool will only work with the original network setup printer. I renamed mine by adding the word “Status” to the end of the existing printer name.

You could do this renaming step first.

Reboot.

After reboot the printer setup should run once again to install the USB fax printer. After setup has completed you’ll need to change the port for that as well and rename the previous fax printer. So when your all done you’ll have 4 printer icons, two network printer and two network fax printers. Make sure that the device settings for duplex is set to “Installed” and that printing preferences print on both sides is set to “Automatically”.

That sounds like quite a neat workaround.  However, since I have 4 PCs I'd have to have a very long USB lead or lug my 7280 around the house to set up.  So, I shall suffer the error message.  But thanks all the same!

ductapeNgum.  Do you disconnect the usb connnection after the reboot and install of the usb fax printer and use the wireless connection?  And do you set up to print to the usb printer or the wireless printer?

Yes, disconnect the USB cable and use the the USB printer setup for your wireless, it will work provided you use the correct Ports setting located in the printer properties under the Ports tab

This same issue occurs on the HP C6270 Photosmart All-in-one as well, purchased here in New Zealand in 2009!

The fix as outlined works on this machine as well.

Needless to say HP now has another frustrated customer due to this fault

- I wasted many hours on this issue

- there is no documentaton on this issue in the box, on line or outside of this Support Forum
