Can I print to IPV6 address on OfficeJet 7612 (Model Number : G1X85A)

I can use the IPV6 address to browse to the printer if I enclose the address in square brackets.

But using the "Update IP Address" tool square brackets and colons  are not allowed , so entering IPV6 addresses are not allowed?

Is it possable to print to the IPV6 address?

Someone else may pipe in here, but you should have IPv6 disabled in the printer anyway.

Can you please explain why I should have that disabled, because I have two problems with that "advice" :

Selecting "enable only IPV4" in the setup and then saving the change appears to do nothing. As the page refreshes it shows that "enable both ipv4 and ipv6" is the current configuration. 

Disabling IPV6 would make it more difficult to accomplish my desire to print using IPV6.

I assume this printer is in your home and not on an open network.

yes -it is in my home, on a private network - theoretically hidden from the rest of the world behind a cable modem and router.


The reason for desiring IPV6 is because I work from home, and access the company network by using a VPN. 
The VPN prevents my laptop fom seeing local IPV4 addresses and devices, but it does not appear to restrict access to local IPV6 addresses and devices. 

So using IPV6, I should be able to print without having to disconnect from the company VPN.
( and if that worked I assume I would also be able to scan and fax while in the VPN too - making expense reports easier to do as well )

Well I'm not sure about using it thru VPN.  When I was working, at home, I had my IT department configure my printer through a VPN pass thru.  

I never needed IPv6 even for this.   Sorry.

This can be done - but not using the HP software.

Instead of using the HP apps   "Update IP Address" or HP's "Printer setup and software", use the windows control panel and use the "Add new printer" option there.

When Windows searches for the printer, you can cancel the search, and then choose the button for "I dont see my printer listed".  That will take you to screens that will allow you to manually enter the IP address and it will accept the IPV6 address.  Once you enter the address, windows will discover the printer, and allow you to use the HP drivers for it, and pick a name for it

So now I have the printer showing up twice.  Once with IPV6, and once with IPv4.  when in the VPN, I can print to the "IPV6 printer".  And if not in the VPN, I can use the HP stuff to Print, set the IP, check ink levels, scan, and fax.
