HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

Cannot access any menu item until I remove ink cartridges, then can't do factory reset until I reinstall ink cartridges. It's like the most recent firmware update bricked my printer which worked until a few weeks ago.

Error message: Printer Failure

There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP.

Given recent reports, I have to wonder if it's true HP disabled functions if non-HP cartridges used which were not a requirement when I bought the printer (or I wouldn't have done so).

I'd appreciate any guidance. Thank you!

Response from HP via FB messenger: Yes we have new Dynamic Security on HP printer which basically doesn't allow non HP ink cartridges to work with HP printers, you may need to use Genuine HP cartridges.

Buyer beware.  I would never purchase a printer (or product) that has such anti-consumer DRM. In this case I wasn't given a choice. It would be like buying a car, then two years later having it disabled until you buy 'approved manufacturer's parts' at a 'certified dealer' (at double or more the price with half the service/support). No NAPA or aftermarket parts - just marked up ones. Done with HP - not just printers, but laptops and any other product. They've pulled this crap before but decided to settle the paltry $1.5 million lawsuit. Now it's just a cost of doing business, regardless of impact to consumers.

What they may not have factored in is consumers have more information available. Browse Reddit, ARS Technica, or most any tech-oriented forum and HP's reputation with printers has gone into a freefall. If they'll do this with printers, what's next? Only HP approved software?
