I wound up downloading Adobe reader and made it my preferred PDF reader- and it works.

A warm welcome to HP Support Community! I'd like to help.
Which application are you using to print PDF files. Eg: Adobe, Preview?
How is the printer connected, USB or Wireless?
Let me know!

Thanks! Updating Mac OS and Adobe may resolve the issue, let's try these steps:
1.) Use the steps available here to update Mac OS.
2.) Launch Adobe Acrobat/Reader, choose Help > Check for Updates.
Once you update Mac OS and Adobe Acrobat, try to print a PDF using Adobe Acrobat. If issue persist, try printing the PDF file as an image. You may use the steps available here to print the PDF file as an image.
Let me know how it goes!

Turns out it is not Adobe I downloaded from the App Store but Kdan PDF reader, a look-alike!
I tried to find Adobe Acrobate Reader PC at the App Store and it is not there.
Maybe I 'll just take the easier way out and print what I need from the Mac Pro!

It could be an issue with the printer driver installed on your Mac. We could try removing the existing printer driver and then setting up the printer with Apple AirPrint. Here is how to do it:
Please ensure the printer is up-to-date with its firmware. If you are unsure, you can download and install the latest firmware update from here.
1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.
3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.
4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.
5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint or Secure AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.
6.) Try to print.
Keep me posted!
