I've successfully set up my new printer but cannot complete the wifi set-up step.
It says my Mac laptop is connected to a 5GHz wifi network but the printer can only be connected to a 2.5GHz network.
It gave me the option to change my computer connection to 2.5GHz or to complete wifi set-up using a USB cable.
I chose the latter as I'd rather not reduce my wifi capability.
When I got to the 'Join' step, with my Macbook Air and the correct printer showing on screen, after the 'wheel' had gone round a while I got a pop-up to say that it's not possible to connect.
I've tried the troubleshooting recommendations, such as pushing the WPS button on the router, printing out the HP Nework Configuration Page (under Wireless it shows my MAC hardware address and my network name/SSID but says 'disconnected' under Status), and moving the printer nearer and further from the router (it says 1m to 1.5m is optimum, I've also tried less and more).
Both items are on the same wifi network and are plugged in.
Hope someone can help.
Many thanks.

@Pip44, Welcome to HP Support Community!
The printer as you already know cannot be connected to the 5GHz network, so when you're trying to convert the USB connection to wireless, the printer will still try to connect to your computer's network i.e., 5GHz and hence is unsuccessful.
Ensure your router supports dual-band network and the 2.4GHz band should have a different SSID or Network name for the printer to connect to it.
If you are not sure of your router settings, contact your service provider understand the router specifications.
Connect the printer with WPS
Use WPS to connect the printer to your wireless network.
-
Locate the WPS button on your router, but do not press it yet.
-
Turn on the printer. If the printer is in sleep mode, press the Cancel button on the control panel.
-
Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Wireless light and Power light starts to flash, this will restore previous network settings if any.
-
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button
for at least 3 seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash.
-
On the router, press and hold the WPS button for 3 to 5 seconds or until it shows that the WPS connection process has started.
Once the printer connects to the wireless network, the blue Wireless light on the control panel turns on solid.
HP recommends having both the printer and the computer on the same network to be able to print/scan. There is a possibility that it may print on 5Ghz but may lose out other features. The Printer is basically designed to cover a larger range and medium bandwidth transfer which is why 2.4Ghz is recommended and 5Ghz bandwidth transfer is faster but covers less range.
Let me know if you need any further assistance.
Keep me posted.
Cheers 🙂

Hello @TEJ1602,
Thank you so much for your help. It seems to be working now!
How do I check that it hasn't now set my computer band to 2.4GHz as well? It's a dual-band network, like you said.
Also, I printed out your instructions in the email I received and I notice that at the bottom of page 1 and the top of page 2 a line of text is split in half - in otherwords, the top half of the letters are showing on page 1 and the bottom half are on page 2. Please could you tell me how I can remedy this?
Many thanks again for your help,
PIp

Glad to know it is working fine.
To check the connected network on the computer, click on the WiFi icon on the top right corner.
If the 2.4Ghz and the 5GHz network has different network names it will be listed. The one that has the check mark is the network to which your computer is connected to.
Hope that answers your question.
Cheers 🙂

Hi TEJ1602
Unfortunately I don't have separate names for the two different bands, there is only the one name. Any more ideas how I can check that it hasn't reduced my computer to 2.4GHz?
Thanks again for your help,
Pip

If you do not have separate names, you can log in to the router page and check for connected devices on each of the bands. If you need assistance, you can contact your service provider.
