I found the problem. It's quite easy to fix. There's a cavity where there was an entire page of paper crunched up that is not accesible from the access door. Unplug the printer. Use a Phillips screwdrived and remove the four screws in the back of the printer. There are two on either side that hold the scanner head in place. After the screws are removed, carefully lift the scanner mechanism up, and look inside for a crunched up page and remove it. Put the scanner head back on and drive the screws back into place. Plug in the printer and turn on the power. Fingers crossed!

I don't think there is any special "reset" option other than to unplug it and plug it back in again. In my case, I found residual paper stuck in the thing, and removing the srews in my diagram above helped me to resolve it. Good luck!
