@Micha77: Not certain, but it might be worth seeing if the location can be modified via PJL service mode. I know you can change the serial number through PJL, but I'm not sure what else can be configured. Repairatrooper might know more.

I found the repair manual for the M281. If you look at Page 438 it clearly shows in detail how to disassembler the printer to replace the formatter board: http://printerhub.com.my/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/m281-repair-manual-1.pdf

Also I had a conversation with german HP printer support. Interestingly they acknowledged the issue. They told me , nothing could be done about it. Self repair not possible. Paid repair is also not possible because the printer is 'too old' and there is already the 'successor model' released (?!).

The agent then issued a voucher to get a discount of 20% for a new printer. I'd say this is better than nothing.

It was also interesting that she asked if I had the '79' error code at first and if I had done a factory reset. I confirmed both. Then she thold me that if you are in the 'Error 79' state, you could recover from the issue by disabling IPv6 - but you should *not* do the factory reset.

This isn't true. I tried disabling IPv6 but not worked.

@Deuils, I am in the middle of doing some other urgent things, but once I am done, I will contact HP and ask for support - this is the 1st thing to do. Let's see what they say...

Hi everyone,

I have some good news from my end. The board I bought on Alixpress is functional! I have been sent a ZIP file with some very small .rfu files and and .exe file as wel as a (Chinese) manual. With that I was able to get my formatter board working again. I think it was just an initialisation rfu or something because the rfu files were very small (a few 100 bytes). After intalling it via a USB cable there was a progress bar on the display and the printer booted up normally after that. The firmware that was installed was the 20200612 version. I'm not sure if I shoud upgrade to the last good known one (april this year). I will also try to see if I can revive my old formatter board with this software.

I have made the ZIP file available for download at: [content removed]

for anyone who needs it or wants to study the software.

@JoopR - thanks for the update and sharing the utility. Do you know if the board has a location ID of China or something else? Just curious.

@Katherine73: This is an actual photo of the board:20221110_194506.jpg

Hope this shows the information you're after? Or is there a way to check otherwise?
