Thank you ClearToSend!  I do have the USB cable plugged between the PC and the back of the printer which is currently set to "Ready 2 download".  I have both files in a folder called "HP".  I'm at a cmd prompt as admin.  Unfortunately, when I run I get the following:

Perhaps, because I'm running from powershell.  I will try an actual CMD prompt next.

Never mind.  I was able to get it to work just fine.  I now have two printers.  Hmmm.  Anyone want a nice Color LaserJet Pro MFP-M281fdw?  No warranty, but it works like a charm!!

I can not update the board

Oké that was easy. when you bridge the printboard connectors to start printer in download mode, printer USB kabel must be connected to the PC from where you want to send the RFU file..... other wise the board is not recognized

I wanted to share 2 emails I just received from HP after I submitted a case to HP support 2 days before my warranty expired. I submitted and created a case on 10/26/2022 the day my printer started acting up with error 49. I attached a copy of the warranty to the email and explained what I was experiencing. They emailed back with confirmation that they received my request for service. Now after finding and repairing the printer on with the help of this community I received these 2 emails yesterday stating my case is now closed. I never received anything in between my first confirmation of them receiving my service request until this case closed email. They actually provided me with phone numbers on this email. I called and tried to speak with any live person. It requested my serial number. once I provided that it prompted me asking what type of assistance I needed. It then said it was transferring me to a HP agent then it hung up. Great service (yeah right). I really believe there is no one that works for HP and its all AI.

I just wanted to post these here in case anyone wanted to try and call HP directly. I hope this helps anyone be able to get in touch with HP over the phone.

Just an update.  Replacement Formatter Board arrived today and was fitted (date code 07/14/18).  Unfortunately it behaves exactly like the last one and whilst there is no 79 or 49 error it constantly asks me to "Resend Firmware".  As with the previous board, the only .rfu file that processes to a smiley completion is the cljmfpM280fw_20220414.ENG.rfu file but on re-booting indicates "Resend Firmware" and the printer stays offline.  The .exe file (M280_Series_FW_Update-20220414.nativeofficefonts.exe) can't be used because the printer is offline and just ends up in the print queue going nowhere.  I guess I will have to wait to see if  HP release an updated firmware file.  I have the .exe file for the dodgy update (M280_Series_FW_Update-20221010.exe) but can' extract the .RFU file from it.  Don't really want to use it anyway as it rejects my genuine HP toners.   Not sure where to go from here as I think, for now, I've reached the end of the road (unless HP do actually release an updated firmware in .rfu format that actually works, and frankly, that's not very likely).

Is there going to be a group lawsuit against HP for this problem? Everything I have tried from customer support does not fix my Color LaserJet Pro MFP-M281cdw.  Support  refuses to send a technician out or replace my printer.

Thought I would try the tech support route.  I am told HP are working on an updated firmware which is due to be released in "Early December" so fairly imminent (I read that on this forum somewhere as well).  I am told it will be another .EXE file (like the current firmware version).  Hopefully one of the experts on here will be able to extract the .RFU version from the .EXE file as that is the only way I am going to be able to get the firmware onto my printer.  I am just going to have to wait a bit longer...

The fix outlined by Incith et al worked for me. My only input is that this unit was purchased in the US but didn't have the jumper pins. That may have more to do with ship dates than with European versions.
