HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281dfw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw has started turning on and off and on and off and on repeatedly by itself.  When it was new 4 months ago it was doing the same thing and quickly burned up the power board and had to be sent back to HP and replaced.  This "new" printer is now doing the same thing.  This one is now NOT under warranty so I'm concerned that it too will burn up and all I will have is a $450 paper weight.

I have done the automated Q&A online and the printer is NOT plugged into a power strip, I HAVE replaced the perfectly good power cord, I am now using a DIFFERENT outlet, and etc...  What else can I do before this printer burns up too?

We can perform a factory defaults on the printer-

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Hi @TheResumeGuys,

I'd like to help!

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Printer is still having the same issue.  I have reset the product (with the printer turned on I disconnected the power cord from the rear of the printer then unplugged the power cord from the wall outlet. I waited at least 60 seconds then plugged the power cord directly into a wall outlet (no power strip or cluster plug) and finally reconnected the power cord to the printer.  I have also installed the latest firmware from June 12, 2020.

What else can be done?

Thanks!!

I am having the exact same problem.  Can you please send me the reset instructions that appear to have worked for the other customer?

Here are the steps that I was sent via private message :

NVRAM Reset

Please note that you will be required to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection at the end of the
last step (including manually entering your Wi-Fi password, so have it handy).

STEPS:
Turn On the Product, as soon as the HP logo appears
Press and hold the Lower Right quadrant of the touchscreen,
When you see the message ‘Permanent Storage Init.’ release the button.
When the reboot has been completed, the device will return to the ready state.
