Hi @TeamFrancks,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2842e is experiencing an ink error, indicated by the red light on the color cartridge. This can happen for several reasons, especially with brand new cartridges from HP Instant Ink. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that both ink cartridges (color and black) are properly installed. Remove them and reseat them, making sure there are no obstructions and that they're snapped in securely.
  • Remove Protective Tape: If there are any plastic protective strips on the cartridges that you might have missed removing, take them off. These strips can prevent proper contact with the printer.
  • Check for Compatibility: Make sure the cartridges are compatible with your printer model. Even brand new cartridges can sometimes be the wrong type.
  • Clean Contacts: Turn off the printer and unplug it. Remove the cartridges and gently clean the contacts on the cartridges and in the printer with a lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the ink nozzles.
  • Reset the Printer: Perform a reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it for about a minute, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.
  • Check for Software Updates: Sometimes, updating the printer software or drivers can resolve compatibility issues. You can check the HP website for any updates specific to your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
