Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Was working fine for years. Then today started giving me problems. First, it said "printer not responding" in dialog box on computer. Now it says "printing" both on dialog box on computer and on printer mini-screen but, it is printing very slowly.  Prints a line, then 15 seconds goes by, then prints another line, then another 30 seconds, then another line, then 15 seconds, then another line then 30 seconds, etc, etc, etc.  Will take over an hour to print at this rate...

I have tried unplugging it, deleting and re-adding the device, and downloading new firmware. Deleted all jobs in queu etc.

Very frustrating.

You may remove the color ink cartridge and check if you are able to use the printer with only the black.

Keep me posted.

@slice22, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand the printing is slow. To assist you better,

  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word, or Webpages and check if the issue persists?
  • Try making a standalone copy from the flatbed glass and check if that prints fine. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on Mac

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

If the issue persists, reinstall the printer using the AirPrint driver

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Note: Select "Bonjour multifunction" under kind while installing.

Try printing.

As stated, already tried all those things

First I tried to print from in design. But then I tried printing a pdf as well from preview. I think it’s a communication problem but what do I know? . The last thing you asked me, I’m not sure what that means. Please explain what that means and I’ll try it.

(How do I make a copy from the flatbed glass?)

HP Recommended

@slice22

Place a document on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer screen. Check the speed. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a software issue.

To check if the connectivity is fine between these devices, perform a ping test

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Let me know how it goes.

OK so here's what is happening (and maybe this is the problem) I hit Copy > 1: Start Color > and a message comes up that says: "Copy does not support Envelope #10. Load a supported size of paper in this tray to continue. Touch ? to view the supported paper." If I hit "OK" it goes back to "1: Start Color."  If I hit "?" it describes the paper that is acceptable: "Letter (8.5x11in), legal (8.5x14in), Executive (7.25x10.5in), A4 (218x297mm), 4x6in, 5x7in, 10x15cm, Hagaki (100x148mm), L (89x127mm), 2L (127x178mm)" So I hit "OK" and the error message "Copy does not support Envelope #10"... comes up again.  BTW I have regular 8.5x11in paper in the printer.  Maybe THIS is the issue.

When I tried the next thing you asked, an odd thing happened too. It gives the IP address and there's an option to print. I assume this means it would print the information out for you so I tried that. When I did, it tells me that there's an ink cartridge problem and to take them out and reinstall them - which I did. This didn't help and the error message comes up again. So I can buy new cartridges and see if that helps with this issue as well. But I would hate to buy new cartridges if this doesn't help and inevitably I will need a new printer anyway because chances are, a new printer will use different sized cartridges...

OK I tried the "PING" thing you suggested. When I type in the address (I'm assuming its the six double digit number separated by dashes) and hit "ping" a message comes up that says:

ping has started

ping cannot resolve XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX Unknown host

Do not buy the new ink cartridges yet. Remove the papers from the printer, reinsert them and adjust the width guides.

For assistance, you may refer to - Loading Paper, Cards, and Envelopes

Once you load the papers and close the tray, you will get an option on the printer screen to select the paper type and paper size.

Make the right settings.

Once done, try to make a copy from the flatbed glass again.

Regarding the ink cartridges, which ink cartridge is indicated in the error?

You may remove this ink cartridge and try printing with the other ink cartridge.

Let me know how it goes.

I tried everything you said. Still has the error message saying "Copy does not support Envelope #10".   I even tried replacing the current paper with NEW paper.

As far as the ink cartridge: On the mini printer screen it appears to be the B&W cartridge so I took it out and put it back in. But on my computer screen a message came up that the color cartridge was "damaged" so I took it that out and put it back in as well.

But I can't even get beyond the first message anyway regarding the paper (above).
