ENVY Photo 7100 Printer is always offline when I try to use it.  Every time I want o print or scan, I have to cycle the printer off and on by unplugging it from the wall outlet.  The power switch on the left hand side of the printer does nothing.

The touch screen becomes inoperative, and will do nothing to control the printer until  I unplug the printer, to restart it.  The HP smart app always say that the printer is off line, and then can't be found.  This happens every time I try to use the printer.  WTH?

Likely scenarios (not the ONLY possible causes) include:

  • Poor Wireless Connection - that is, the connection to the network is failing.
  • The Printer Firmware needs to be updated.
  • Poor Physical Connection - that is, the power to the printer is not sufficient, not stable, not appropriate.
  • Hardware Difficulty - that is, the printer power or other component is failing.

Notes:

Ignore anything you have tried, anything you dislike, or with which you disagree.

Poor Wireless Connection

Lots of possible indicators include and are not limited to:

  • Weak, poorly configured, outdated router
  • Missing configuration in the network setup (SSID network name / connection)
  • Windows Updates have interfered with the printer software that manages the connection
  • Obstructions between the printer and the router / network controller (walls, metal, lights using the same bandwidth, for example)
  • The connection type used to connect the printer to the network is failing

Things to Try:

  1. Offline Doctor
  2. Manually change the connection type to TCP/IP
  3. Change the connection to a Static IP address

1.  The Offline Doctor can help with the connection type and some of the software issues that cause the connection to break.  The Doctor cannot prevent Windows Updates from (again / later) ravaging the printer software or other parts of the File System.

Resource – Choose the right doctor for the job

Open Website

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Click the orange Download Now option / box

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared

THEN

Select / Answer question “Is print offline?” = YES

Answering Yes selects the “right doctor” version for these issues.

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties > Tab General >

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove the part that says “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

Verify results.  If necessary, set the newly added / renamed printer as the default.

A secondary “Scan” printer may be added, that is, the “Do not Delete” driver / printer.  As it says, do not delete the entry.

2.  Manually change the connection to TCP/IP

Method - Create TCP IP port (InkJet Printer)

Find printer's IP /  IPv4 address

Print a Configuration Page

OR

Tap on the wireless icon on Printer Control / Display Panel

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer > Left-Click Printer Properties

Select Tab Ports  > Add Port

Select Standard TCP/IP Port > New Port and follow the wizard.
Use / Enter IP address for the printer.

Example - How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by greenturtle

Video:  Create & Use TCP IP port
“Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)”

3.  Assign a Static IP address to the printer

Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can result in all sorts of odd issues.

Poor Physical Connection

This might include the Power button not working as expected.  It might be helpful (emphasis on might) to press and hold down the power button for a couple of seconds as opposed to click and release.

Known solutions, presented in the order to be considered / completed:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hardware Difficulty

There is no remote "fix" if the power supply or other physical components of the printer are failing.

This is the least likely of the failure points - it can happen.
