Printer is stuck on the boot screen with the 2 of 6 dots filled in. The load bar is full. No matter what I do, or for how long I leave it unplugged, it just continues to get stuck at that point. I can't get into the printer settings since it can't get thru the boot cycle to be connected to the internet. It is not included in my Wi-Fi connected devices. There is no paper jam, nor are the cartridges faulty.

Hi @Oldsauce

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry your Envy 5055 is stuck on the boot screen—it’s incredibly frustrating when the printer won’t even reach the point where you can interact with it.

Since you’ve already confirmed there’s no paper jam, cartridge issue, or Wi-Fi connection, and the boot bar is frozen at 2 dots, let’s try a few deeper recovery steps to help bring it back to life.

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

This reset can clear firmware lockups without affecting your printhead or ink levels.

  1. Power off the printer and disconnect the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. While the printer is still unplugged, press and hold the Power button.
  4. While holding the Power button, plug the power cord back into the printer and then into the wall.
  5. Continue holding the Power button for 15 more seconds, then release.
  6. Wait to see if the printer progresses past the boot screen.

Step 2: Remove Ink Cartridges and Retry Boot

Sometimes a cartridge communication fault can stall the boot process.

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and remove both cartridges.
  3. Close the door, plug the printer back in, and power it on without cartridges installed.
  4. If it boots successfully, it will prompt you to install cartridges—this confirms the issue is related to ink detection.

Step 3: Try USB Firmware Recovery (if accessible)

If the printer is detected via USB on your PC, you may be able to reload the firmware.

  1. Connect the printer to your PC using a USB cable.
  2. Visit: HP Printer Firmware Update Utility
  3. Download the utility and follow the on-screen steps to detect and update the printer.

If the printer is not detected, this step may not be possible until it boots successfully.

Let me know how the printer responds to these steps. You’ve done the right thing by checking for jams and cartridge issues—now we’ll try to nudge it past that frozen screen.
