HP Envy 5640 Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Envy 5640 printer.  Purchased 2016 and has always worked perfectly.  Now I  replaced both ink cartridges with the same HP 62 cartridges and now get error message "Remove and install the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed and then touch  OK".  It will not print and continues to give the same message.

Hi @Cookie1937 ,

Welcome to the HP Support-Community.

First, we have to find out which cartridge causes the trouble. Do this first:

Remove both cartridges and then close the access panel. Does the error message change?
Then re-insert each cartridge one by one and close the access flap after each cartridge. For which cartridge does the error message appear again?

Cheers!

Thank you Nils_K

This solution works if the color cartridge is removed thus allowing the printer to work in black mode only.  Now, how do I get the new color cartridge to work too?

Hi,

There are several possible reasons for that kind of problem.

First, try to reset the printerby following these steps:

1. Turn on the printer and wait until it stops making noise
2. Remove both cartridges and close the access door.
3. Now, with the printer on, unplug the power plug from the back of the printer and wait 60 seconds.
4. now plug in the power cable and put the cartridges back in.

If this doesn't help, update the printer's firmware. You'll find detailed instructions and the setup on this hyperlink:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-envy-5640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/...

Don't worry, we'll make the printer working again. 😊

Cheers!

My Envy 5640 printer has two new cartridges exactly the same HP 62 as the original ones.  I have followed the steps provided by you and now have the black cartridge working, but not the color.  What more can I do?

Hi,

You can try to clean the electrical contacts between printer and cartridge by using this manual:

HP inkjet printers - Cleaning the Contacts

If this doesn't help neither, I do believe that the tri-color cartridge is faulty. You can complain it at HP directly. There are several ways to do so.

You can either contact HP Social Media Support ( Facebook / Twitter: @ HPSupport ) or call HP (Contact HP)

Cheers!

Nils
