HP ENVY 5640 e-All-in-One Printer

I am actually using OS 14.2 on a MacBook Air, but the menu didn't allow me that choice.

To print 1-sided I have to open the printing settings and re-click on 1-sided despite it being set as the default mode.  If I don't the printer defaults to 2-sided.

Also when I do print 2 sided, the printer is very noisy.... almost like gears are grinding.

Hi @Pepe1001,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with your printer settings and the noise during 2-sided printing. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve these problems.

1. Printer Settings:

  • Open the "Printers & Scanners" preferences on your MacBook.
  • Select your HP Envy 5640 printer.
  • Click on "Options & Supplies" or "Manage" and then select the "Driver" tab.
  • Check if the default settings are correctly set to 1-sided printing.
  • If necessary, make changes to the default settings and apply them.

2. Printer Firmware Update:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Visit the HP official website to find and download the latest firmware for your specific printer model.

3. Reset Printing System:

  • Open "Printers & Scanners" preferences.
  • Right-click on the printer in the list and choose "Reset printing system."
  • Re-add your printer and check the default settings again.

4. Printer Driver Update:

  • Make sure you have the latest printer driver installed. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest driver for your printer.

5. Check Paper Type and Size Settings:

  • Ensure that the paper type and size settings in both the printer and print settings on your computer match.

6. Paper Path Inspection:

  • Inspect the paper path for any obstructions or foreign objects that may be causing the noise during 2-sided printing.

7. Print a Test Page:

  • Print a test page to check if the issue persists. This can help identify whether the problem is specific to certain documents or settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Alden4

I went through your suggestions in order

1.  There is no "driver tab" in the "Options & supplies" menu

2./4. I had updated the driver and firmware but afterwards, my virus app found a HP file with malware.

3. Reset Printing system seemed to be the magic bullet.  So far the printer is working as it should.

Happy Days
