So I just had a nightmare of a time trying to do just this.  I removed the normal paper and inserted 4X6 HP photo paper into the tray then closed the paper tray.  Said it was out of paper.  Tried switching try types in the print dialog box, said I was out of paper.  Tried putting more than one piece in, said I was out of paper.  Finally, what ended up working, for some reason, was I opened the tray as far as possible, made sure the photo paper tray was also out as far as possible, made sure the photo paper was pushed as far back as it would go, then slid the whole tray in gently.  I hit print and it still didn't work.  Without canceling the job I opened the top of the printer to see if maybe something was jammed, it wasn't, when I closed the printer again, it started printing.  I don't have a solid fix for this, but this worked for me.  I also had to make sure to go into the extra settings to make sure the paper tray and size was set there correctly as it often wasn't on the print dialog box.  I tried using just windows pictures to print and the HP App.

I was finally able to get my photos to print. It's a lot more work than necessary, but it will consistently print from the photo tray.

1. Open the HP Smart App

2. Double-click on the Print Photos button. The print screen display will appear.

3. Make sure the "Let the app change my printing preferences" option is OFF

4. Then, scroll down and double-click the More Settings option.

5. At the top of the More Settings screen, select one of the two photo printing options.

6. Change the Paper Size and Paper Type to desired choices.

7. Change the Paper Source to "Photo Tray". Select OK.

8. It will take you back to the print screen display. Select PRINT.

I hope this helps everyone.

Photo tray not working when printing from windows laptop, using Adobe Photoshop or Photo Gallery . First tried with "Auto select" paper tray setting, that did not work. Printed from main tray. Then selected the "photo paper tray" that did not work, printed from main tray. Photo tray worked when printing from usb flash drive plugged into printer. Also the printer screen shows main tray loaded with letter size paper and 4x6 photo paper loaded in aux tray when tray is first closed. The main tray can be selected (it is highlighted) but the Photo tray cannot be selected (it is grayed out). My previous printer was an HP Photosmart that always selected the correct tray with software set to "Auto Select".

I've tried those steps a dozen times... to no avail!!

These steps worked for me. I agree, it's a lot more work than it should be, especially since the printer is named Envy Photo 7855, has a designated photo paper tray and  a HP "Smart" App to to run it.
