The black ink cartridge in my printer isn’t communicating with the printer and says error.

I’ve tried the troubleshooting steps and taken it out, cleaned it and inside where it sits, turned the printer off and on again, but no luck. I even ordered another ink on my account hoping that it was just the cartridge causing the problem, but the new one still says the same.  Any ideas on what to do please?

Hi @Beck47,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried some common troubleshooting steps, which is a good start. Here are a few additional things you could try.

  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes a simple reset can resolve communication errors. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Ensure that the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer where the cartridge sits are clean. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to gently clean the contacts.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues with cartridges.
  • Reinstall the Cartridge: Remove the cartridge from the printer, then reinstall it making sure it's properly seated in the cartridge slot.
  • Try a Different Cartridge Slot: If your printer has multiple cartridge slots for the same color, try inserting the black ink cartridge into a different slot to see if the printer recognizes it there.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
