We getting error Error 44.A0.A1 - SSL failed. Certificate invalid. on our HP MFP devices with PrinterLogic CPA installed. If we remove the PrinterLogic CPA we no longer get this message. We this happens its followed by USB initialization error. What is the root cause why this error occurs and what is the resolution? Thank you.

Hi @Cardal,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
The error 44.A0.A1 – SSL failed. Certificate invalid on your HP MFP devices with PrinterLogic CPA installed, followed by a USB initialization error, is typically caused by a certificate validation failure during secure communication between the printer and the PrinterLogic Client Printer Agent (CPA).
Root Cause
This issue occurs because:
- The SSL certificate used by PrinterLogic CPA is either expired, self-signed, or not trusted by the printer firmware.
- HP FutureSmart firmware enforces strict SSL certificate validation for secure connections.
- When the printer cannot validate the certificate, it throws the 44.A0.A1 error, and the USB initialization may fail as a secondary effect of the failed secure connection.
Resolution Steps
1. Update Printer Firmware
Ensure your HP MFP is running the latest FutureSmart firmware, which may include fixes for SSL handling:
- Visit Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support and search for your printer model.
2. Use a Valid SSL Certificate
- Replace the self-signed or invalid certificate used by PrinterLogic CPA with a valid certificate signed by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA).
- Ensure the hostname in the certificate matches the printer’s expected endpoint.
3. Disable SSL Validation (if permitted)
- On some HP printers, you can disable strict SSL validation:
- Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) of the printer.
- Go to Networking > Advanced Settings > SSL/TLS Settings.
- Disable certificate validation (not recommended for production environments unless necessary).
4. Reinstall or Update PrinterLogic CPA
- Ensure you’re using the latest version of PrinterLogic CPA.
- Reinstall the CPA with updated certificate settings or using a trusted certificate.
5. Contact PrinterLogic Support
If the issue persists, PrinterLogic may need to provide a custom configuration or updated CPA version compatible with HP’s SSL requirements.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for the response. We do have a open ticket right now with Vasion PrinterLogic and we have installed their suggested certificate. We are getting these errors when the devices are in sleep mode. Why would there be any communication from the printer to the PrinterLogic cpa on the printer?

Hi @Cardal,
The error you're seeing is 44.A0.A1 - SSL failed. A certificate invalid generally indicates a failure during SSL/TLS communication between the printer and a remote service, in this case, PrinterLogic's CPA (Client Printer Agent) or its cloud service.
I would request a check with the support team; they should help solve the issue.
If you have any trouble related to the printer, keep us posted, so we can help you better.
