For anyone who has a LaserJet that is suddenly rebooting and/or giving an Error Service Code 79 (to shut down and reboot), it appears that the issue is the IPv6 network setting on the printer. The solution for me (and for some others) is simply to go in to the Printer Settings > Network Settings  and turn IPv6 OFF, and reboot.

 

Message to HP, this is not acceptable behaviour for a device that costs more than $600. The printer firmware should have IPv6 OFF by default, especially if the code is such that the printer can not recover gracefully from failed attempts to use IPv6.

I see that you are getting 79 Service Error on your HP LaserJet printer.

 

Please follow the steps listed below for 79 Service Error:

 

1. Disconnect the printer from the network.

If on wired network: Unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the printer.

If on wireless network: Power off the router.

2. Turn off the printer and wait for 30 seconds. Turn on the printer, if printer is in ready state.

3. Disable the IPv6 feature from the front panel by clicking Setup -> Network Setup -> Network Services -> IPv6, and then set to Off.

4. Connect the printer back to the network again and send a print job via network.

Hi Rainbow23, you did not read my post.

The CAUSE of the issue is IPv6 bening enable on the printer. This shows there is a long-standing bug in your firmware.

The SOLUTION is to disable IPv6 on the printer, until HP recognizes they need to fix their firmware.

Hello Gimbal, and HP Support,


same problem exists here. IPv6 is disabled and problem appears sporadically, sometimes at night and is realy anoying. Reboot in loop... I think there is another bug that causes this reboots.

And why is to disable this option a solution? We call it only a interim solution.

And sorry the printer is a bit older than 1 year now and I have no possibility to contact the support without paying for that. This is my first and last HP printer if this will problem perists.

What worked for me was to:

1. Disable IPv6 on the printer, reboot

2. Shut down the printer, leave it unplugged

3. Unplug the ROUTER as well

4. Leave everything unplugged for a while

5. Plug the router back in, let it boot

6. Plug the printer in and turn it on.

7. Cross your fingers and hope it works.

yes thats my "workaround" too. But that does not last forever and the problem occurs again after some time.

Thank you and lets hope HP releases a firmware without a IPv6 bug.

Yes, I admit the fix I used only worked for a short time.

 

It appears that once again, HP has pushed a firmware that BREAKS printers that are just out of warranty, then offers no solution. Where are the instructions to reset NVRAM for M283?

Others on this forum have demonstrated that downgrading the firmware is the only solution, but HP has removed access to the FTP server where firmware is downloaded from.

 

SO is HP willfully putting out buggy firmware for printers that are just out of warranty, hoping you will buy a new printer, and denying you access to the older firmware that would fix it?
