HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer

My HP Envy 5055 is showing error code 0X00829C98 HW WATCHDOG C.

I tried the troubleshooting in this forum, and on this forum, and neither set of processes worked. I unplugged the power cord from the printer and from the wall, waited 3 minutes, then plugged them back in. The printer worked for approximately 30 seconds before producing this error code again. I cannot turn off IPv6 per this article and I cannot update the firmware because I cannot interact with the printer for long enough to get to these settings before the error code pops up again. I cannot remove the ink cartridges because opening the printer does not move the cartridge bar when this error code is present.

Requesting technical support gives me no options to choose and says "Currently we are unable to identify the correct Care Pack for HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer." Is there no way to fix this? I do not want to buy a new printer. I want this printer to work.

Hi @blair222

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a very frustrating issue with your HP Envy 5055 printer, especially with the error code 0X00829C98 HW WATCHDOG C. This type of error typically indicates an internal hardware issue, possibly with the printer's firmware, sensors, or communication with its hardware components.

Since you’ve already attempted a few troubleshooting steps like unplugging the printer and trying to reset it, but the error still persists, I’ll provide some additional methods you can try to resolve this.

1. Power Cycle the Printer Again (Thorough Power Reset)

You may have already done this, but let’s ensure the process is complete. A proper power cycle is essential for resetting the printer’s internal components.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Unplug the printer from both the wall outlet and the power cord.
  • Wait for 5-10 minutes (to allow all internal components to reset).
  • Hold down the power button on the printer for 30 seconds during this wait. This will help discharge any remaining electrical charge in the system.
  • Plug the printer back into the wall, but do not plug in the power cord yet.
  • Wait for a moment to see if any lights or error messages appear on the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and see if the error code still appears.

2. Check for Hardware Obstructions or Mechanical Issues

Sometimes, mechanical issues like misaligned or stuck parts can cause error codes. Here's what you can check:

  • Cartridge Bay: Open the printer’s cover and manually inspect the cartridge area. Look for any obstructions like small pieces of paper or debris that might be blocking the cartridge bar from moving properly.
  • Paper Tray and Feed Mechanism: Ensure that there are no jams or obstructions in the paper tray and feed rollers, which could be triggering hardware errors.

3. Remove the Ink Cartridges (If Possible)

Since you mentioned that the cartridge bar doesn’t move while the error is displayed, this can be tricky. However, it might still be possible to remove the ink cartridges in order to reset things. Here’s how:

  • Turn off the printer completely.
  • Open the printer cover and look for a way to gently move the cartridge bar manually. Sometimes, a light push from the side or gently nudging the cartridge area can free up the bar.
  • Remove the ink cartridges. This could allow the printer to reset its hardware state, and you might be able to test it without the cartridges in.

4. Firmware Recovery Mode (If Accessible)

The HW WATCHDOG error could be related to a firmware issue, especially if the firmware failed to update or got corrupted. To attempt a firmware recovery:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the 'Cancel' and 'Wireless' buttons at the same time.
  3. While holding those buttons, turn the printer back on and continue to hold the buttons for a few more seconds until you see any light indications or the printer enters recovery mode.
  4. If successful, you can then check for any firmware updates by connecting the printer to a computer via USB (if possible) or through your Wi-Fi connection, provided you can access the settings before the error pops up again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
