HP DeskJet 4220e All-in-One Printer

Could anyone help with clearing an error code on my printer? E3 on HP Deskjet 4220e printer. I think there is some paper jammed in there but I have gone through the suggestions to clear the jam and looked inside by turning it upside down. I cannot see any paper but there is an issue trying to feed the paper through.

@Montem2, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The E3 error code on your HP DeskJet 4220e All-in-One Printer typically indicates a carriage jam—this means the ink cartridge carriage is stuck or obstructed.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and clear the E3 error:

Turn Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.

Open the Cartridge Access Door

  • Gently open the access door to view the ink cartridge carriage.
  • If the carriage is stuck, do not force it.

Check for Obstructions

  • Look for any bits of paper, labels, or debris inside.
  • Use a flashlight if needed.
  • Gently move the carriage left and right to ensure it moves freely.
  • If the carriage has a latch, ensure it is properly secured.

Reset the Printer

  • Wait at least 60 seconds before plugging the printer back in.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Turn the printer back on.

Try a Test Print

  • Load paper and try printing a test page to see if the issue is resolved.
