I have the following message on my printer screen: "There is a problem with the printer.  Turn the printer off, then on."

I've done this several times including unplugging for a while and turning back on.  Every time, the message reappears after a short period of time.  Between the time of turning on and the message, I can access the web interface and it appears to work properly.  Then the message comes on and I can't access the web interface.  All of the firmware is updated and I've made no changes to the printer recently.  Any idea what can be happening?  Maybe a printer cartridge has gone bad?  All the cartridges have plenty of ink.  Not sure what the problem is, but would appreciate some help.

Hi @tfojta,

I'd like to help!

We can perform a factory defaults on the printer to resolve the issue

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
  • In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Support Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

I have had the same problem with my HP 8710 for a couple of weeks. Can you please provide instructions on resetting to factory defaults or other advice? Thank you, Dan

Here's what worked for me with my HP Officejet Pro 8710:

(1) Press BL four times.  The BL button is not on the screen, but is next to it at the bottom left.  This gives a menu which should have something like "Support Menu".

(2) Press "Support Menu"

(3) Up/Down arrows to "Resets Menu".  Press OK.

(4) Up/Down arrows to "Semi-full reset".  Press OK.

The unit will reset and power back on. The nice thing about this was that it retained all of my settings including my password and wifi settings.

Good luck!

Hello,

I have the same issue with my Officejet 8710 (8715). Ihave tried the online HP diagnostic which seems to think all is well.
Can you please send a link to the reset instructions?

Also, I have had increasing trouble with the printer start printing then stop mid job (even mid page) for no apparent reason while printing PDF pages which causes an "error- "  which is listed on the line that shows the Document name in the active printer window that shows the que of documents for the printer.

Any help is appreciated!
Cin

The reset instructions were sent to me in a DM by Jay_G24 who is a support agent.  Not sure of a link.  I can't help on the other issues.  I suggest posting your own issue like I did and see if they can help.  They got back to me quickly and solved my problem.  Sorry I can't help more.
