Hi @Deepti27

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The E4 error code on an HP Smart Tank 720 typically indicates a problem related to the printhead or cartridge. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the error:

Troubleshooting E4 Error on HP Smart Tank 720:

Check Printhead and Cartridge Installation:

  • Open the printer’s access door.
  • Wait for the printer carriage to stop moving.
  • Ensure that the printheads are correctly installed. They should snap securely into their designated spots.
  • Check the cartridges for compatibility and proper installation.

Clean Printhead Contacts:

  • Remove the printheads from the printer.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the printheads and the printer.
  • Make sure they are dry before reinstalling them.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

Reinstall Cartridges and Printheads:

  • Remove the printheads and reinsert them, ensuring they lock into place.
  • Close the access door and check if the error persists.

Verify Cartridge and Printhead:

  • Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges and printheads as third-party or refilled ones might cause compatibility issues.

These steps should help address the E4 error. However, if the problem persists, it may indicate a hardware issue.
