HP Recommended

HP just sent an update and I tried running the 2 updates and both failed. I tried sending in an error report but it said there was no troubleshooting help available and the error report wasn't filed. Does this mean my printer is defective? Is there anythign that can be done - I really hate having to buy a new printer every couple of years - terrible waste and a burden on our landfills, etc. Please help!
