HP 4650
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I installed new HP ink cartridges correctly that corresponded with my HP 4650.  It printed several times. Then it stopped and started saying I need to remove and reinstall indicated ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed. I did that to both the black and colored ink. I have searched all the forums and followed all the links and instructions of unplugging my printer, cleaning my cartridges with a lint free cloth, waiting, reinstalling .. even reinstalling a new cartridge! And still, I am receiving the same stupid message. So I have 3 open ink cartridges that are essentially new, a newer printer whose warranty that just ran out and no other solutions ... and lots of work that needed to get done.  grrrrrrrrr

Which toner cartridge is being indicated as needing reinstalled? Usually on the display it will show the toner in question with a ? mark or no toner level indicated. That is the cartridge that is bad and needs to be replaced. Did you make sure to remove all the shipping tape and packaging from the cartridge and remove the sealing tape (if equipped) to release the toner inside (usually a small tab of clear and flexible tape needs to be pulled out from one of the ends of the cartridge). Sometimes a cartridge will fail after being installed and a new one will need to replace it. Reinstalling usually won't work when the cartridge is defective.

Hello, it does not actually indicate which toner cartridge needs to be replaced. Both the color and black cartridge was brand new however. I have replaced the black one twice with 63XL (I believe ...I am downstairs and believe that is the right number).  I have now tried this with two new cartridges, which I read was compatible with the 4650.  And yes, I did take off the tape to expose the ink to the printer:)  I am trying to do my taxes and print out necessary documents, plus other day-to-day work and this is becoming such a hassle.

I have the same problem, with the black (63) Instant Ink cartridge supplied by HP. It was working fine and suddenly I get this error message. I, too, have gone through all the posted steps to correct the problem, to include a new, HP ink cartridge purchased at the store, and still the problem persists. My printer, too, is out of warranty by a few months. Ironically, I bought this printer because my old one (same model) had the same ink cartridge problem that couldn't be corrected. Apparently these printers only last about a year and a half before this persistent error forces you to buy a new one. Fool me twice, shame on me. I'm going to the store tomorrow to investigate another brand. Judging from the number of posts online about this problem, it's a widespread and recurring one, so buyer beware.
