HP 7640 printer will pick up 4x6 photo paper and print, but when I load 5x7 photo paper it comes back and say there was no paper ""please load paper and try again"" and I have done that dozens of times but same reply from the printer, about one year ago it was doing the same thing but after several try it did pick up the 5x7 paper. but not now, I have reset the printer to factory setting; installed the latest firmware and on and on, with no help.
Can anyone help PLEASE

It might be that the printer is not aware that you changed the paper in the tray.
- 5x7 inch paper is to be loaded into the main tray (after removing regular paper from that tray).
- Load the paper print side down, short sides front and back. (See User Guide, starting on page 11)
- Adjust the paper width guides to sit right next to the paper without "squishing" the paper too tightly.
- When you close the tray, be sure to change the settings on the printer display (control panel) to let the printer know that a new size / paper / media has been loaded.
Hints:
In general, the paper sensor works best when there are not too few and not too many sheets of paper in the tray. For example, try loading 5-8 sheets of your 5x7 inch photo paper in the tray (as opposed to just one or two sheets).
In addition to having correctly loaded the tray, the settings in the software you are using to submit the job to the printer must be adjusted. Sometimes the settings are in the main print menu or perhaps in "Properties", "Preferences".
Example, Print Dialog Settings should include:
Media type (kind of paper) Photo
Paper Size 5x7in.
Source Main Tray (or Tray 1)
Duplex OFF
Help from the many documents in your printer's website support:

and
Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows)
Consider using a photo print software for your photos and projects:

- Example 3 - Photo Creations – Passport Photos
- Printing with Paint (mspaint)

- Print Photo at Desired Size
- Example – Hawk photo 5 - Scaling - “Adjust to” 100% - Passport Photos
- Printing Photos with Windows Photo Viewer for Windows
- Considering Aspect Ratio

When I load 5x7 photo paper into the printer, the front panel confirms that there is 5x7 paper loaded in the photo tray, and then when I send a photo to the printer either from my PC or from cell phones ""HP Smart"" software it will come back and states no paper, although the front panal in the printer acknowledges there is 5x7 paper in there, I dont know if this is a hardware problem or not.
OK this is how I got around it, I did NOT load any 5x7photo paper into the photo tray, instead I loaded the 5x7 in the main tray, where you put regular letter 8.5x11 in it and adjusted the tray and I sent a print to the printer, it work fine

That is correct. The photo tray only supports the smaller (4x6) paper. Use the main tray for 5x7 inch paper.
From previous post:
- 5x7 inch paper is to be loaded into the main tray (after removing regular paper from that tray).
Glad it is fixed.
Happy Printing.
