Printer shows

"Update Required, A Problem has occurred with one of the printer's critical system files. A printer update will be installed to fix this problem"

after power on. No reactions on touch keys, PC doesn't find the printer. Firmware update usinf an USB stick failed.

Looks like the same problem you can see in this ticket:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/HP-OfficeJet-pro-8210-Update-Required/t...

and I tried everything suggested there.

Can you help me bring my printer back to life?

Hi @KlausFriese,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your printer shows “Update Required – A problem has occurred with one of the printer’s critical system files” and becomes completely unresponsive. You’ve already tried the USB firmware update and followed the HP Community thread, which shows you’ve done everything right.

Step-by-Step Recovery for “Update Required” Error

1. Power Reset the Printer

This clears temporary faults and may allow the firmware update to proceed:

  • Turn off the printer (if possible).
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  • Reconnect the cord to the printer and turn it on.

If the printer becomes idle and shows the Home screen, proceed to firmware update.

2. Try Firmware Update via HP Smart or EWS

If the printer becomes responsive:

  • Open the HP Smart App on your PC or mobile.
  • Go to Advanced Settings > Printer Updates > Check Now.
  • Or access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) using its IP address in a browser:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Updates > Check Now.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Vikram,

thanks for your suggestions.

The Printer was disconnected from power for more than 12 hours (I moved the printer to another room for tests) and I followed the "Poer reset" steps too. Unfortunately it didn't help.

HP Smart App was not installed on my PC before, I installed the App but it didn't find the printer. Printer was connected to the Router via Ethernet and to the PC via USB. Both didn't work.
I checked the list of connected devices on the router to find the IP but I didn't see the printer.

Looks like the printer is still stuck in displaying the error message and doesn't connect to the network.

Any other ideas?

Thanks
Klaus
