HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Is it possible to revert/downgrade firmware?  My HP 8600 was working FINE until recently and upon replacing the cartridges, I keep getting a "damaged ink cartridge" error for the magenta cartridge.  I originally was trying to use a 3rd party cartridge but went out today and bought genuine HP cartridges, replaced them all and no luck.  I tried pulling the plug, resetting factory settings, removing and reseating the printhead cartridge.  Nothing is working.  I am frustrated that I've spent so much money on ink and it's still not working.   i HOPE someone out there has found a solution!  When I inspect inside the print head cartridge, I see some remnants of ink but nothing looks any worse on the magenta than the other colors.

A warm welcome to HP forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

HP Printers does not allow firmware downgrades, the latest printer firmware for Officejet 8600 is quite stable and secure and it shouldn't cause any ink cartridge errors. We might be able to clear the ink cartridge error by power resetting the printer and cleaning cartridge electrical contacts. Let's try these steps:

1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector

2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door

3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)

4) Clean the electrical contacts, refer to step 5 from this document.

5) Plug the power cord back into the printer

6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks @Senan6806 I tried the steps you mentioned and still am getting a damaged cartridge error for magenta.  I've tried 3 new cartridges and still get this error.  I've used a microfiber cloth to clean the contacts on the cartridge.  My printer was working fine before this latest firmware update!
