1.HP OJP 8600 Plus
2. using Windows 7
3. Error message "out of paper"
4. This is a new printer, works fine with regular paper
5. Printer will not pick up quality photo paper. To recieve an answer such as "use thin photo paper", ie, non-quality paper, is not an acceptable option. If a more acceptable answer is not given, my answer is return this machine for another machine.

Hi there icantride65,
This article has a number of troubleshooting steps for the out of paper error. Give the steps outlined a shot(especially cleaning the paper rollers as a little dust etc can cause major issues with good glossy photo paper) and let us know if it helps.
Best of Luck!

No, this was not the problem. The paper rollers are clean, they were clean, I cleaned them again, and this is not the problem. The problem is the mechanical pickup design function is crap on HPs. HP needs to re-engineer this, not waste people's time with a cookie cutter answers that will never help the 8600 pick up a thick piece of photo paper. BTW, I took back my 8600 today and traded it for an Epson. Then I bought a 2nd Epson. I am through with rediculous cookie cutter answers from HP. Hey HP, REDESIGN YOUR PICK-UP! YOU HAVE JUST LOST A TWO DECADES LONG CUSTOMER BECAUSE YOU WASTED 90 MINUTES MORE OF MY TIME TODAY.
I need to change my handle from icantride65 to icantstandHP.

I just bought this printer today to replace my aging 7310 and cannot believe it will not pick up or allow you to use photo quality paper.
I have always used and loved HP products but this was a major mistake by your company and for me it is going back to the store for another brand. I will inform their management to let everyone know that this 8600 Plus is useless for color photo's
WHY HP id you let this happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:smileymad:

It's about the settings in the printer properties. Set it to the color picture paper you are suing and all you problems will go away. I was also going to take it back till my 15 year old suggested using the properties.

You said to choose "thicker quality paper." The only choices are:
"Thicker plain paper" - result is that it doesn't pick it up
I have also tried the numerous other photo papers and glossy photo papers, and it doesn't pick it up.
Exactly which "thicker quality setting" are you using? I'm calling your bluff!

I think while answering you would have not tried this printer. I just bought this printer a day before and on feeding Photopaper it failed to accept with a message out of paper. The roller etc issue will come only if the printer was ever used.. As a curosity may be I have put in the paper in wrong direction I reversed the side and there came a print on back of paper which was all wet with color. Would actually like to use how to use Photo Paper while printing pictures, Can have solution, it will help, otherwise it is a dissapointment to have this printer which is expensive in price bad in expectations as a dollor 30 computer can print normal pictures on photo paper without any issues
