HP Envy 6220
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I go to scan my printer says connecting then the screen starts flashing all icons on and off with no action. I have to hold down the power button to reset every time.

This does not happen all the time but I would say over 50% of the time.

It happens both when I select scan on the printer and also when I use the HP smart app on my PC. I  have tried it wireless and via USB also

I've updated the software and it still happens. Any ideas would be appreciated

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Does this happen while copying too?

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  1. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Regrettably after all looked like it was fixed the problem has re-occurred. It seems to happen more if you use the functions from the printer screen. Today I went to copy a document and after selecting to copy on the printer screen the screen went black and started flashing. I had to disconnect and reconnect power to reset.

Any ideas?

Hi. I have worked through this and the printer is already installed with the latest firmware.

It seems to be mainly when I use the screen on the printer so if I select to scan I go through the steps and it starts to scan then the screen starts flashing. At this point I have run HP print and Scan doctor but it wont connect with the printer either by wireless or usb until I rest it. When I run the doctor after reset it finds nothing.

I have attached a 2 pictures. The screen flashes between the 2 shots when the screen when it starts flashing?shot 1shot 1shot 2shot 2

Any ideas or have I got a broken printer?
