Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have owned this printer for 2-3 years and it has worked flawlessly.  Last week, I started getting an error on the screen after replacing the black ink cartridge.  The error reads "Ink Cartridges Problem.  Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed and then touch OK."

The only way that I can get the printer to print is to remove and reinstall the black ink cartridge, or do a hard reset (remove power cord).  Once this is done, I can print one page and then the error comes back.  I even returned the ink cartridge and swapped for a new one, and the error still persists.  I've checked the printers firmware, and it is up to date.

Any resolution to this issue?  Thanks.

Hi @phi1514,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are experiencing an ink cartridge problem error with your HP Envy 7640 printer, there are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

  • Check the ink cartridges: Make sure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and that they are not empty or low on ink. You can check the ink levels on your printer's control panel or through the printer software on your computer.
  • Clean the ink cartridges: If the ink cartridges are not empty or low on ink, try cleaning the ink cartridges. You can do this through the printer software on your computer or by following the instructions in your printer manual.
  • Restart the printer: Sometimes simply restarting the printer can resolve the ink cartridge problem error. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Update the printer firmware: Check for and install any available firmware updates for your printer. These updates can sometimes resolve issues with ink cartridges.
  • Replace the ink cartridges: If none of the above steps resolve the ink cartridge problem error, you may need to replace the ink cartridges. Make sure to use genuine HP ink cartridges for best results.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Is there anything else that I can try here, or am I stuck buying a new printer?  I can clear the "error" by removing and re-installing the black ink cartridge and this will allow me to print one page, however the error immediately returns after printing one page.

I shouldn't have to take the ink cartridge out and re-install it each time I need to print something...
