Got my printer, happy with it, enrolled in Instant Ink, got the message "Use the ink that came with your printer and then install the Instant Ink cartridges"

Ok, no problem. Use the printer to print some learning materials, half hour later I get an email saying I'm at my limit. Wait, what? I haven't installed my Instant Ink cartridges yet, how can I reach my limit? Check my account n have racked up charges already.

So the question is - what the hell? Are the cartridges shipped with my printer Instant Ink cartridges? If so why did the system say to use them up before installing the Instant Ink cartridges sent to me? If not then how come I've got a limit and charges?

Is this a case of unclear instructions or a fault?

Edits - March 2018 - New Information

 

 

Printer may have come with ink cartridges based on the following:

 

Regular "Setup Cartridges" used to initialise the ink system. 

 

"First time" setup -- once the Setup cartridges have done their job they can be used until empty at which time they must be replaced with regular purchased ink

OR

In the event that you enroll in Instant Ink Service, replace the depleted with Instant Ink cartridges that will be included in your Welcome Kit.

 

Instant Ink Ready Cartridges

 

Instant Ink "ready" cartridges can be used with Instant Ink Service -- these cartridges do not "become" Instant Ink cartridges until and IF you enroll in the Instant Ink Service. 

 

The "Instant Ink" ready cartridges can be used by the printer to initialise the ink system.

 

The If-Then bits:

 

If the ink cartridges that came with the printer were "Instant Ink Ready",

If you were using the ink that came with the printer,

If you immediately signed up for Instant Ink,

If the printer detected Instant Ink Cartridges in the printer,

The ink in the printer would become part of the Instant Ink plan,

The Instant Ink Service would commence as soon as enrollment was complete / verified.

 

 

If the ink that came with the printer was Instant Ink Ready,

If you removed all the ink cartridges that came with the printer,

If you replaced all the cartridges with "the cartridge I bought" (purchased ink),

If the printer did NOT (therefore) detect Instant Ink cartridges in the printer,

If you (then) signed up for Instant Ink Service 

The Service would commence when you received your Welcome kit and installed the Instant Ink cartridges included in the Kit.

 

If the explanation does not make sense,

If the scenario (description) does not fit your situation,

If you want to talk to Instant Ink Support staff,

Please contact Instant Ink Support in your region (location on the planet).
