HP use to make such good products. Now they make products that they flake out with updates then try to sell you customer service contracts? I had the same issue with the ink it is a complete scam.

I  am having the same problem.  I bought a color printer (HP 8610) because I wanted the OPTION to be able to print in color but also the OPTION to only print in black and white, because MOST of my printing is black and white (i.e. greyscale) but my printer keeps running out of COLORED ink even though I have not done any color printing between when I replaced ALL THE COLOR CARTRIDGES (at great expense) and now.

This clearly was a deliberate design feature, based on what I'm finding out from other users who posted here and from those I talk to outside of this forum and actually I think it was a pretty nasty thing for HP to do and probably a sound basis for a class action lawsuit as they seem to have deliberately designed this printer to deplete colored ink even when one prints exclusively in black and white (greyscale) - and they designed this deliberately as a method to force people to buy colored ink when they don't want or need it.  They further force people to buy colored ink because they also designed the printer not to even print in black and white when there's plenty of black ink but, due to the above, the printer is designed to still prevent printing if any of the color ink cartridges has run out.

This is clearly an unfair and pretty sneaky business practice and unless HP can do something to fix this, like give us a software patch that allows us to print in greyscale using only black ink even when a color cartridge is depleted, or as an option will buy the printer back AT COST and reimburse me for the color ink cartridges I've been FORCED to buy to print important documents, I may pursue other remedies as I have now been harmed by this unscrupulous business practice as I had to print time sensitive documents and I was unable to do so.

I can understand HP telling the user they can no longer print in color when any color cartridge runs out, but to

A)  Deplete the color cartridges when the user specifies they only want to print in black and white and

B)  To suspend even greyscale printing when a color cartridge runs out

Both of these are unfair and extremely unwise business practices, as far as I'm concerned - and HP has an OBLIGATION to make this right to all customers who've bought any product that has these features as a part of their design.

In a sentence near the end, I  meant to say "not to" instead of just "to" - I think that will fix the minor error I made.
