The fix is to install the HP printer driver for Mac OS from the HP website.  And once installed the software, add the printer and make sure you choose "AirPint" rather than the default one (Secure AirPrint).

I gave this a try with the version of the driver the Macs had installed themselves (being sure to select AirPrint rather than Secure AirPrint) and it doesn't seem to have fixed it.

I presume when you install the printer (by just letting the Mac discover it) that the printer directs the Mac to just download the latest version of the driver directly from HP?

Do you happen to know what version of the driver are you using currently?

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy,

Did you remove the printer (click - button) from the Printers & Scanners first?  Otherwise it won't use the new driver.

The driver package is "HP Smart for Mac OS" version 3.0 from https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-series/790....

The running driver info as below.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8710:

Thanks for that Tony, yep I did remove the printer first.

I'll check what version of the driver it ended up with though, and maybe try again, manually downloading from the HP site. It looks like a new version of the Mac driver may have been released on the 5th of Feb, and that looks to be the one you have. I'm not sure if I have that one or not.

I see you're on the 8610, whereas I've got the 8715, not sure if that could be making a difference.

I'll do some digging and report back.

Thanks again,

Andy

You are welcome.

I am on 8710, not 8610.  8710 should not be far off form 8715 you have.

Just to update this thread in case it helps anyone else...

I think my issues are now resolved and were related to the way I'd originally installed the printer.

When I installed the printer on the Macs I just went to "Printers" and then let the Mac discover the printer and install the driver itself. I think this meant the Mac went off to Apple for the driver and it seemed to result in the 8600 driver being installed.

So to correct things I...

a) Did any outstanding Mac OS updates.
b) Manually deleted the printer (and fax) from under Printers.
c) Manually uninstalled as much HP software as I could from Applications.

d) Downloaded and installed HP Easy Start from here… https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c02440673

e) The Mac then complained right at the end of process about unsigned drivers being installed, so I had to give permission and then reboot. Grr!

f) As the install of HP Easy Start had been aborted I then had to do the installation again.

g) Once the install was complete I checked the installed driver version (it was now v4.30 or something rather than the v2.0 of the 8600 driver it had installed before).

I don't want to count any chickens but the Mac in question has now been fine for a couple of weeks (whereas before it would print double every couple of days).

Anyway, hope this helps someone. In summary, don't let the Mac install the driver it wants to - it will get it wrong.

Thanks,

Andy

Was this problem ever solved?  I have the same problem with a new HP 8715.

HP Recommended

Yes it did. See my solution before here.

Yes, the solution is to install the HP driver from the website rather than using the driver than Apple automatically installed.

I am suddenly having the exact same problem.  It is frustrating as can be.  Is there ANYTHING that can be done? problem?HP Print Problem.jpg

I followed the instructions about using the HP downloaded driver instead of the MacOS provided driver.  The problem seemed to be abated.  About three weeks ago the same problem started to recur with very similar double images to the one you uploaded.  The problem is that it happens once and then doesn't recur that same day.  I thought it was just the first print of the day, but I don't print every day and it doesn't happen with any consistency to support trouble shooting.

Any new ideas would be welcomed.

I am running Mojave 10.14.5, printer firmware version WBP2CN1919BR, but have no information about which driver is installed.
