I am getting this exact behavior with a 8710 less than a month old. Double vision text renders the whole page unreadable. Boxes down the right margin resemble a ribbon of printer test page output. Clients are likewise all macOS machines, but all are 10.13 High Sierra.

Did cleaning the rollers do anything? This seems like a printing error, since the duplicated text is shifted about two millimeters aside, a far wider tolerance than just rollers.

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Flower_Bud is at your service.

As I understand, you're  having print quality issue while printing,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Have you made any hardware/software changes made?

How is the copy quality?

Could you share a picture of the document?

Does this happen while printing from one application or all?

Let's Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page, and then evaluate the results.

  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .

  3. Swipe up on the display, touch Reports, and then touch Print Quality Report.

A Print Quality Diagnostic Page prints.

Let me know how is the Print Quality Diagnostic Page,

Do get back to me as I have a few more tricks up my sleeve,

That said, If I have helped you resolve the issue,

Cheers 🙂

I would like to help more but I fixed this the old fashioned way: I took the printer back to Staples and they swapped out the faulty 8710 with one that works fine.

I can summarize the problem though:

The "double vision" is effectively a printed page of text, overlayed by the same text about 2 or 3 mm to the side.

It would typically be the whole doc in a one page print job, the first page of a multipage document, and--rarely--another page after page one. I never saw a whole multipage doc come out with double vision though, usally just one of the pages.

Diagnostic pages always came out perfectly. They never showed the double vision effect.

After getting the replacement printer I ditched all the blurred doc sheets. If I come across one, I'll scan it and post it for HP support to review.

Hello everyone. I am back and I have another new 8710 to add to the offending list. While the double vision problem happens less frequently than with the older 8710, it still happens the same way with the brand new 8710 printer. The rest of the systems is unchanged: The two macOS High Sierra laptops remain the only print job senders connected by wireless. I updated the 8710 firmware, updatd both Chrome and Firefox browsers, and remain current on latest macOS patches.

I have provided two partial scans of examples of the "double vision" print quality. These also show the streaking at one margin. I cannot see a pattern of which application does this (browsers, MS Word, Acrobat, etc) but the outcomes all generally look like these examples.

The first sample is the most common output: doubly printed text, with the "U"-shaped squares in the right gutter. This image is an older sample, though I saw our new 8710 spat out a few sheets like this earlier today.

This is another example.

You can see the spacing between the doubled text here very clearly via the numbered section headers. It's not a few millimeters, closer to a quarter of an inch. I doubt cleaning the rollers would ever fix this.

I welcome any other inquiries from HP support on how to further diagnose the double vision problem, why it happens on two separate printers (which implies its more of a systemic problem), and what makes the 8710 special. I currently also have a new 7155 ENVY that has not yet ever exhibited the doublevision problem, even though it is directly connected to one of the macOS laptops and printing similar documents.

I have been running into the same problem.  The occurances are totally random.  a couple of times I had notice it was the first thing I printed on a given day, but . then that's not always the case.  It's happened when printing from PowerPoint, From MS Word, and from Excel.  All of these have been from my MacBook Pro running High Sierra OSX.  Whenever it happens, I immediately reprint whatever it is and then it prints just fine.  Whatever the glitch is, I see no pattern to it whatsoever.

I had the same issue.  HP sent out the replacement print headend.  Didn't help, still having the same issue.  Then HP sent out the replacement printer, still having the issue.  It's really annoying, as I only print a few pages in a couple of weeks, ended the first page almost always double vision/image.  I lost my trust with this specific model but HP refuses to replace another model for me, as the Carepack only covers replacing the same model.  It seems getting refund and get another model is the only option.  Will try to reach out to HP helpdesk chat again tomorrow.  Can't believe how much time I had wasted on fixing this stupid printer.

To Raj1788 and others:

I can now report the update from my 8710 experience. After my second 8710 showed the double-text problem, I decided to look at other printer manufacturers. I purchased an Epson eco tank. I immediately returned it because of very slow page latency and print time, and the unit was physically flimsy. I then tried to upgrade to a Brother color laser with faster advertised print speed, which I also promptly returned. It too had horrible page latency. Powering up the laser actually dimmed the lights in the room, and the printer secreted a fine mist of excess toner. I returned back to HP and bought the 8720. This is big, sturdy, has good page latency and super print rate, and holds larger ink cartridges than the 8710. But it too has the occasional double text and margin bars printing problem!!! So far it only happens once every few hundred pages and is not a terminal issue. I also overcame a problem with a squealing paper drive wheel by using a spray lubricant. I would recommend the 8720 if you don’t mind the workarounds for these two flaws. Despite repeated tries, I don’t see a better SOHO printer for high print volumes.

I am having the same problem. I have two of these printers; one at my office and one in my home office. It randomly prints these "double vision" prints and is extremely frustrating and wasteful. Is there a fix for this? I print on another, larger printer at work for bigger jobs and have never had this issue.
