My HP Envy Photo 7858 was printing photos fine using the photo tray and 4 x 6 HP paper. Suddenly, it stops recognizing the 4 x 6 paper and wants me to load 5 x 7 instead. Why? I have checked that there is nothing blocking the tray from moving and I am using the Photo app and selecting photo tray and hp photo paper. I do not understand why it wants me to put 5 x 7 paper in the photo tray when I already have 4 x 6 in there.
Does anyone understand why this is happening? Thanks for your help!

One likely answer:
The printer and / or the software application used to submit the job to the printer might not be aware of the paper loaded in the tray / printer.
General Discussion
The most important factors include:
- The Operating System / version (unknown)
- The software / application you are using to view and submit the job to the printer (unknown)
- The paper size and the paper type (4x6 inch / type assumed to be Photo Paper in a supported weight for the printer)
- Whether the printer is aware of the paper size / paper type you have loaded into the printer (unknown)
- What you have tried prior to having asked the question. Telling us what you have already tried saves time so we don't duplicate what has been done.
- Whether the printer is actually working as expected, that is, the Firmware is updated and the hardware is functioning normally.
HP Smart Mobile
The printer must be aware / set for the paper to be used before the item to be printed is opened in the application.
HP Smart Windows and Using the Full Driver printer software in supported software
Similar preliminary setup in EWS, though the HP Smart application and full driver can also adjust the paper setting.
Start...
General Steps
- Load the paper into the printer according to the instructions in the printer user guide.
- Tell the printer about the paper loaded in the printer.
- Open the software / application > set the job > submit to the printer
Paper already loaded? Open tray – wait a few seconds – Close tray - Update information - Continue
Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel
Section is not applicable to printers lacking a printer display panel.
Open Printer Tray,
If you have not yet done so, Remove / add desired paper size - type
else
Wait a few seconds
Close Tray
IF applicable for your printer:
On the Printer Control Display Panel,
Click Modify / Change / No-Yes (wording varies), adjust the paper size and type, Click OK
No Size? If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom
Note: Not all printers allow selection of “Custom”

Embedded Web Server (EWS)
EWS option is applicable to network connected printers.
If the printer is on the network,
If the EWS feature is supported on your printer,
Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / configure your printer.
Verify / Update Tray and Paper Information
EWS – Browser
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)
Click Apply to save changes
EWS - HP Smart for Mobile - iOS
Reminder: The EWS Tray and Paper settings must be updated before you open the object to be printed.
Open HP Smart (for mobile)
Open Settings
Open Add / Set Up a Printer
Scroll down, Click, Tray and Paper
As Available: Check / Adjust settings in Advanced
Click Apply to save changes
EWS - HP Smart – Windows
Start HP Smart Application
Printer Settings
In section Settings > Advanced
Tab Settings > Preferences
Tray and Paper Management
As Available: Check / Adjust settings in Advanced
Click Apply to save changes
If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)
Click Apply to save changes
NOTES
- Size not listed in the Drop-down menu? If available: Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)
- EWS is also available in HP Smart Windows and HP Smart Mobile > Settings > Advanced
- Features and options differ by printer model and type.

Set the Preferences – Windows
This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.
Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver and / or might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" (or similar) from within printing software / applications.
Preferences and Envelopes:
Select / leave Printing Preferences shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Next,
If using HP Smart Windows,
Make sure the full driver printer software is also installed and functional.
Full Driver printer software
Preparation
If you have not done so,
In addition to the HP Smart application,
Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.
HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.
Printer Software Check
Notes
If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.
In addition, the installed software places two shortcut icons on the Desktop named for the printer.

Printer software not installed?
Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software
For printers that support the option,
Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.
- Home Page - HP Easy Start
- Open Category Software and Drivers
- Topic: Software-Utility
- Download-and-Save the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
- If using USB: Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
- Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
- Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
- If using USB: Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
- After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.
Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey
- Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
- About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
- You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
- If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription. Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
- Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.
