Hi @Linda359

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Smart Tank 5100 is displaying an attention light due to a printhead issue, here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Check for Error Messages

  • Look for any specific error messages on the printer’s display. These messages can provide more details about the issue.

2. Inspect the Printheads

  • Remove and Reseat the Printheads:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    2. Open the printer cover and carefully remove the printhead assembly.
    3. Check for any ink residue or debris and gently clean the printhead with a lint-free cloth.
    4. Reinstall the printhead, making sure it’s seated properly.

3. Check Ink Levels

  • Ensure that all ink tanks have sufficient ink. Low or empty tanks can sometimes trigger errors.

4. Clean the Printhead Nozzles

  • Use the printer’s maintenance menu to clean the printhead nozzles. This option is usually found in the printer settings under Tools or Maintenance.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware:
    • Check the HP Support website or use the HP Smart app to see if any updates are available.

6. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it for about 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.

7. Perform a Print Quality Diagnostic

  • Run a print quality diagnostic from the printer’s menu to see if it identifies any issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
