Hi @Linda359
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Smart Tank 5100 is displaying an attention light due to a printhead issue, here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
1. Check for Error Messages
- Look for any specific error messages on the printer’s display. These messages can provide more details about the issue.
2. Inspect the Printheads
- Remove and Reseat the Printheads:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the printer cover and carefully remove the printhead assembly.
- Check for any ink residue or debris and gently clean the printhead with a lint-free cloth.
- Reinstall the printhead, making sure it’s seated properly.
3. Check Ink Levels
- Ensure that all ink tanks have sufficient ink. Low or empty tanks can sometimes trigger errors.
4. Clean the Printhead Nozzles
- Use the printer’s maintenance menu to clean the printhead nozzles. This option is usually found in the printer settings under Tools or Maintenance.
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Ensure your printer has the latest firmware:
- Check the HP Support website or use the HP Smart app to see if any updates are available.
6. Reset the Printer
- Perform a reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it for about 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.
7. Perform a Print Quality Diagnostic
- Run a print quality diagnostic from the printer’s menu to see if it identifies any issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
