After performing a "Web Services" update from the printer web UI, the printer is stuck at a "Verifying" message at startup.
Attempting to perform a reset by unplugging, waiting several minutes and plugging the power back in does not resolve the issue.
When attempting to access the Web UI, a "Welcome to nginx!" screen displays instead of the normal UI.

I have the exact same problem from the same web update. I got prompted to perform an update, and after the update the printer is stuck on "Verifying..."
Needless to say I am very unhappy that an HP updated seems to have bricked my perfectly good and lightly used printer.
I did call HP Support and they had me try several things but ultimately told me I had a hardware failure and then they wanted to sell me on their printer subscription.
After that call I even tried accessing the boot loader to re-flash the firmware and that failed, too. I still get stuck on the "Verifying..." screen.
We need a proper response to this, HP, please respond and give us a path forward.

Hi @ArtWalkerCO
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Smart Tank 7602 is experiencing an issue after performing a Web Services update, which is causing it to get stuck at the "Verifying" message on startup and preventing access to the Web UI correctly. The appearance of the "Welcome to nginx!" screen instead of the expected UI typically indicates that there is an issue with the printer’s web service or the connection between your printer and the server.
Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
While you mentioned you tried unplugging and waiting, let’s try it again with an additional step to ensure that any residual power is cleared from the printer.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait at least 5 minutes to ensure it’s fully powered down and any lingering processes are stopped.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Check if the “Verifying” message is still there after rebooting.
2. Perform a Hard Reset (Factory Reset)
If the power cycle didn’t work, a hard reset might be necessary to clear out the stuck web service update.
- Turn off the printer.
- Press and hold the "Cancel" and "Wireless" buttons at the same time (you may need to refer to your printer's manual for the exact button combination for a hard reset).
- While holding both buttons, turn the printer back on. Continue to hold the buttons until the printer begins the reset process.
- Once the reset is complete, the printer should be returned to its factory settings, and you’ll need to set it up again.
This will clear out the Web Services configuration, including any stuck updates, and may restore functionality.
3. Access the Web UI (After Reset)
If the reset completes successfully, you should be able to access the printer’s web interface again by following these steps:
- Find the printer's IP address:
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel (if accessible).
- Alternatively, access the printer’s Control Panel, go to the Network Settings, and find the IP address listed there.
- Access the Web UI:
- Open a browser on your computer and type the printer’s IP address into the address bar (e.g., http://192.168.x.x).
- You should now be able to access the Web UI.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Can we confirm that the specific buttons are the "WiFi" and "Cancel" buttons?
On the 7602, the "WiFi" button is at the back of the printer and requires a tool to press. The "Cancel" button is a soft button on the top display. Attempting to press both buttons while applying power at the same time is challenging unless you have three hands or two people.

Update: Attempting to reset the printer by holding down the "Cancel" and "Wireless" buttons while applying power does not resolve the issue. The printer still shows a "Verifying..." message at startup and attempting to connect to the web UI still shows a "Welcome to nginx!" page.
Can someone at HP confirm the specific buttons needed to initiate reset on a the Model 7602 printer?

Hello, I‘ve got the exact same issue.
Even the reflash of the Firmware from the following Link is not fixing the Problem.
I guess we need a Option to load the Firmware again from a Inserted USB Drive or some other Option to get the right Firmware back to the Printer.

ArtWalkerCO:
If you unplug the printer, and then press and hold the power button until the screen shows the boot loader, you can try to re-flash the firmware. However, this did not work for me. About 8 seconds by my count. The boot loader shows the white arrow on the left and the red x on the right. Press the red x four times and you get a screen that says "MFG MENU REFLASH" and then the Question Mark lights up. Press the Question Mark 1 time to get to the navigation screen. Once you at the navigation screen the arrow button is left, the red x is right and the question mark is OK.
Using those commands you can attempt to reflash, which did not work for me. I tried every option there and none of them worked, including OOBE which I think means "out of box experience" which is supposed to fully reset.

HP should replace these bricked printers. It is not our fault that a firmware upgrade contained a flaw. It is not a coincidence that multiple people on the same day got prompted for a firmware update and the printer stopped working after the firmware upgrade.
