HP C4480 S/N: CN88FHZ0SH
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This printer has been working perfectly for a number of years. After the lastest update to Windows 10 home edition I am no longer able to print in duplex. There doesn't seem to be any work around. The printer has been "greyed" out and there are three Micro Soft printers showing performing various functions. In additions the number of choices for scanning has been reduced. I no longer seem to have control over my HP printer using HP software.

I understand you are having issues with duplex not printing after the recent Windows 10 update. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

Let's try these steps here to Uninstall and Re-install the printer drivers:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Now click on this link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL30107/mp-109096-2/PS_AIO_03_C4400_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_140... and install the updated printer software

15.) Connect the USB cable only when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Now go ahead and check the settings,

  • Go to Control panel – Devices and printer.
  • Right-click on Photosmart C4480 and select “Printer properties”.
  • Select the “Device settings” tab.
  • Ensure that the “Duplex unit” is set to “Installed” rather than “Not installed” and save the settings.
  • Now again give a right-click on the printer icon and select “Printing preferences”.
  • If a "Printing shortcuts" tab is available, select the "Print on Both Sides" or "Two-sided (Duplex) Printing" option.
  • If “Printing shortcut” is not available, click the “Layout”, “Features”, or “Finishing tab”, depending on which tab displays in your driver version.
  • Locate the "Print on Both Sides" or "Two-sided printing" menu or option, then select the binding or page flip option depending on if you want the document to read like a booklet or a tablet and save the settings.

Hello Jeet,

thank your very much for your detailed response to my query. I will have to consider this because it might be a little bit too complicated for me. However I have downloaded the software and driver that you suggested. It will take a little time for me to work up the courage to do this! I really like my C4480 and it has given me excellent service and I always purchase genuine print cartridges from HP directly. Apparently this is now a common problem as evidenced by the queries on Google.

Now, one very important comment and perhaps you can direct this to the proper area: I received five (5) e-mail replies to my posting all saying they were from HP and to my chargrin, they were all spam/phishing e-mails. I did call one number because they looked so genuine with HP logos etc and then I realized what was happening and I hung up right away. I do still have the e-mails here on my system.

As a result I was relucant to deal with your e-mail however I am very pleased that I did.

Again, many thanks for your excellent help. Kindest regards,

Larry Thivierge

Good morning Jeet,

I have one brief follow up question to your instructions and perhaps it may be something that I have missed.

In step 15, "Connect the USB cable.....". In examining the other steps I didn't read anything about disconnecting the USB cable unless it is in the instructions you go through when you are removing the printer via the uninstall process. I want to make sure that I do everything in proper sequence.

Again thank you very much for your help, especially the detailed instructions that you have provided.

And as well, thanks for your information regarding the spam mail too.

Kindest regards,

Larry
