My HP Deskjet 6980 wireless printer has started to lose its wireless connection to my Dell XPS 13 lately. I have had it connected wirelesly to the XPS for many years but in the past 6 months it has begun to go offline fairly regularly. I then have to remove and reinstall it. When I use the WIN 10 application to install the printer it cannot find the HP as a wireless printer I then have to tell the system what the address of the printer is and then it will install it. I am beginning to think that the wireless system in the printer is starting to go out. Any advice is helpful.

Hello Barachiel and thank you for responding. I have used the HP Print and Scan Doctor and it doesn't find any issues. I have used the Windows10 system to remove the printer and reinstall it. The Windows 10 system will not discover the 6980 printer as a wireless device so I have to search for the printer's Hostname "HP6F8315". It then finds the printer and installs it. After which it works fine for a few days and then goes offline again and I have to restart the process. As I emntioned earlier everything seemed to work fine for many years but has just started acting up in the last 6 months. That is why I was wondering if the"wireless device" in the printer is starting to go bad. Next time it goes offline I will run the Scan Doctor again and see what happens.

Happy New Year Barachiel,
Well the printer wouldn't connect wirelessly again this morning. The first thing I did was run the HP Scan/Print Doctor. It recognized the HP6980 as a printer device but it would not connect to it. I asked the software to "retry" and it connected this time. I don't know if that tells you anything.
I get a sense that the wireless connection in the printer might be going out since it seems to be happening on a regular basis. Is there a way to check that?
Jim

Hi Barachiel. I wanted to let you know that the 6980 has been performing fine the last several weeks. I got to thinking that everytime I uninstalled and reinstalled it using Windows10 it created a new port for the printer so I had about five ports and the 6980 was installed on the latest port. The ports all had the same configuration and were a duplicate of the last port. I deleted all the "old" ports and just left the most currecnt port with the 6980 installed and it has been working fine ever since. I am not techy enough to know if that was the problam but so far its been working. Thanks for your help.
