I have a HP envy 5530 that is enrolled in the hp instant ink program. I also live in the dorms on my college campus. With that being said, I cannot connect my printer to the colleges wifi because it is encripted and does not allow wireless printers to run on the wifi. Now printing wireleesly is not a problem because I can use the wireless direct feature. However, I cannot get my printer connected to the internet to sync with hpconnected.com. Is there any other means of reporting the amount of pages printed and the ink levels to hp?

You might consider setting up a wireless hotspot.  I use FreedomPop, they provide 500 Mb/month free with this one.   OneSaleaDay often has deals on the hotspots for about half price.

Is this the only option? If so i may have to unsubscribe to the service and I would really rather not do that.

Hi KA_11,

My daughter has just tried to connect a HP Envy 5640 to the university wifi. She was barred by the network. Could you please send me a copy of the solution to get around this so that she can use the  Instant Ink feature. Many thanks.

Sorry, if you can connect to a valid WiFi, Instant Ink will not work.

Thanks for the prompt response. Is there a requirement to be permanently connected or would it be sufficient to be connected (say) once per day via a hot spot on her mobile phone to exchange any data? I know that there is the risk with a once per day connection in that she might go over her limit on the number of pages in her subscription package, but we can live with that.

If the printer is connected via USB, you are fine.   Connecting via Hot Spot twice a month should keep Instant Ink working.

So does this mean the printer is connected to the internet through the PC/Laptop? So it updates the usage etc

No.   Instant Ink only works when connected to the Internet.    USB is not connected through the Internet.
