HP Office Jet pro 9018 - message "new unused cartridges must be used for setup" ... I just replaced my ink cartridges with official HP cartridges. Black replaced in May '24 and all colors in July '24.  I cleaned cartridge and printer contacts.  I did a hard reboot.  Still same message.

Hi @OMGjustHelp,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

The error message "new unused cartridges must be used for setup" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9018 usually appears when the printer is trying to complete its initial setup with setup cartridges, which are typically included in the box when the printer is new. This message can still appear even if you’ve replaced the cartridges with official HP ones later on. Here’s how you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Check for Setup Cartridges:

  • If this is the first time you're setting up the printer, you must use the setup cartridges that came with the printer. These cartridges are specifically coded for initial setup and are different from regular cartridges.

2. Ensure Firmware is Updated:

  • Sometimes, the printer needs a firmware update to resolve cartridge recognition issues.
  • Go to the HP website, download the latest firmware for your HP OfficeJet Pro 9018, and install it.

3. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings:

  • Resetting the printer may help clear the setup mode and allow you to use the new cartridges.
  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm and follow any on-screen instructions to reset the printer.

4. Check Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Ensure that the cartridges you are using are genuine HP cartridges, as non-genuine cartridges can cause recognition issues.

5. Reinstall Cartridges Correctly:

  • Open the cartridge access door and wait for the cartridge carrier to move to the center.
  • Remove the cartridges and then reinstall them, making sure they are properly seated.
  • Close the cartridge access door and wait for the printer to recognize the cartridges.

Since you’ve already cleaned the contacts and performed a hard reboot, these additional steps should help in resolving the issue.

If none of the above steps work, it’s best to contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
