I've had this printer for 2 years and have been using the same cartridges in it since I bought it. Today when I had to change 2 of them out, all of the sudden it says that my cartridgess are an older generation cartridge that can't be used with my model.
Please explain how to fix this.

@Jen8720, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
I understand you are not able to use the new replacement ink cartridges due to this error. Apologies for the inconvenience caused. To assist you better,
- What is the exact error message and where do you see this error?
- Are you sure this is an HP genuine ink cartridge?
- Validate this by clicking here - HP Anti-Counterfeit and Fraud (ACF) Program
If this is a genuine HP ink cartridge, I would need some information related to the ink cartridges and the printer which cannot be shared on a public post for security reasons.

I am having the exact same issue. Interesting that there seems to be a trend in the complaints happening in December of 2021, perhaps due to a software update (glitch)? I have not been able to identify a fix for this. When I removed the brand new HP cartridge that started the problem and reinserted the old one, it worked fine.
Not willing to throw away the inventory of brand new HP ink cartridges.
Can anyone help?

Are you using HP inks?
Kindly check the 'End of warranty' date on the ink cartridge. It could be mentioned on the ink cartridge or its packaging.
To know how to check this information, refer to - Ink Supplies Limited Warranty (Scroll down till you see the images)
Send me these details via a private message. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

I have the same issue. I have a HP 8715 Printer. I bought a 2-Pack of 952XL Black Cartridges for the printer from COSTCO. I just finished using the first cartridge, and when I installed the 2nd Cartridge from the same package, I got the message "Older Generation Cartridge" and it is not working. This is totally unacceptable, what kind of rip-off is this? You are wasting my time and it is very frustrating. How can I get my second cartridge to work?

I am having the same problem as everyone else. We had some cartridges that we tried and they didn't work. My wife went to Staples just now and spent a fortune on HP inks and the same problem. It seems like this is a reason to get rid of the machine.
