I need to replace the cartridges, however the printer lid will not open. I have tried rebooting and updated the firmware. I can open it a little but then it stops and I get a chime and yellow light. I do not want to force it as it feels as though it will break

Hi @MickT19,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It’s right not to force the lid on your HP ENVY 6020e — that chime and yellow light are signals from the printer that something isn’t aligned correctly or that it's detecting resistance in the mechanism. Here's how to safely proceed:
How to Access Ink Cartridges on HP ENVY 6020e
Important: The ENVY 6020e has a cartridge access door, not a full lid that lifts like some older models.
📌 Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Power on the printer — the cartridge carriage won't move unless it's on.
- Open the front access door (not the scanner lid):
- Look below the scanner bed.
- There’s a small notch or grip above the output tray that allows you to lift the inner front cover.
- This is the cartridge access door — lift it gently until it clicks into place.
- The carriage should move to the center, allowing access to the cartridges.
If You Hear a Chime and a Yellow Light
This usually means one of the following:
- You're trying to lift the scanner lid or top assembly, which is not designed to open fully on this model.
- The internal sensors detect unusual resistance or movement (such as the top being lifted beyond its range).
Forcing it could break a hinge or trip a hardware sensor, potentially requiring repair.
What to Try Next
If the cartridge access door seems jammed or doesn't move:
- Power off the printer and unplug it for 2–3 minutes.
- Plug it back in and wait until it’s fully on.
- Then gently try opening the inner front cover, not the full top.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
