Ink Cartridge Failure notice persists after 2 months of broad support and advice. New compatible, generic "Atlantic" cartridge today immediately reported as failure as were others since firmware update 1829AR. Received much advice from HP employees on trying to reset and bypass locked printer. Support said the 8600 is obsolete; just buy a new printer. Frequently get message to insert the starter carts that came in the box with the printer. Did that 6 yrs ago! Different carts are often reported as missing/defective/counterfeit but black is the favorite. Brand new Black xl cart today was declared defective after the printer went through the process of setting up; then froze once again. Support offered to sell SETUP carts for $103. Costco genuine HP set available for about $175; new printer for $119. Ink support continues to be the HP8600 problem entangled with firmware update. I know others are having similar issues but still haven't found advice that works. Please advise if a solution is available before yielding to planned obsolescence.

KUMAR0307--Thanks for the response about using genuine/re-manufactured cartridges. I have used HP for about 40 yrs and only recently encountered issues with the chips and firmware that seem to control whether the printer functions or not. I have no issues with the printing and ink quality of HP. However, my recent firmware update literally froze the 8600 with countless messages about missing/defective/counterfeit carts. At one point the firmware called for the set-up carts which I used 6 yrs earlier. The failure to print occurred directly after the firmware update that paired with the chips to stop the printer. From reading the forum I see where chip controls are causing great distress with former customers. Support told me simply to buy a new printer because the 8600 is obsolete! That wasn't nice or accurate. I understand that HP relies on ink sales more than printers but the obfuscations, denial of service, and off-beat messages were probably not a good way to help customers resolve issues brought on by the firmware implementing corporate policy. I like the 8600 and the quality of its printing; it serves me well and eventually I will have to replace it. I still use genuine HP ink whenever I can get a discount from the current price level. Instant ink will better serve schools/business/industry more than individuals simply because they pass on the costs and cannot afford the time to seek help from the forums or other users. I sense a lot of frustration right now and can only hope things improve as the industry goes through competitive changes. I do appreciate your response! Thanks-- Palin1

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.
QualityLogic, one of the world's foremost quality assurance organizations, tested the performance of HP inkjet print cartridges vs. remanufactured (refilled) brands. The results: original HP inkjet print cartridges far surpassed ink refills in both print quality and reliability.
Nearly one out of every six refilled ink cartridges tested was dead on arrival or failed prematurely 70% of refilled cartridges had some form of reliability problem Count on HP original ink cartridges for consistent, worry-free printing.
You may think you're saving money on remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges, but in the long run, the cost of wasted time, ink, and paper can more than make up the difference.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
