Today, I had an issue where the printer (HP8740) would not print. I checked the printer and saw the black ink was low, but the printer itself was not reporting that the cartridge was empty. I also did not get any error saying cartridge empty or anything like that. I changed the cartridge to a new one and the printer printed as normal. In the past, the printer has always reported a low cartridge prior to being empty. I did not get that alert in this case. I don't print often, so I would notice the alert.
I had a recent firmware update a few weeks ago, so I am wondering if this is a bug with the firmware. I could not find a way to report the issue to HP other than to post here. Is there a way to report a possible bug in the firmware other than posting here? Or does someone have a solution to why this didn't report the empty cartridge (which was a genuine HP one, since my printer can't use 3rd party inks.)

@JWS9518, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query.
Thanks for reaching out. It sounds like your printer may have hit a small glitch where it didn’t show the usual low ink warning, even though the cartridge was nearly empty. Since it worked fine after you replaced the black cartridge, it doesn’t seem to be a major issue—just something the ink sensor may have missed.
This likely isn’t caused by the recent firmware update, but we appreciate you bringing it up. Posting here is a good way to let us know, and we do monitor these reports for patterns or possible bugs.
If it happens again, you can try running The HP Smart:
- Download and run the HP Smart. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
- Refer: Use Diagnose & Fix in HP Smart to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support
Thanks again for using genuine HP ink, and let us know if you need anything else!
Take care and have a good day.
