I'm trying to install HPLIP on a Dell Latitude D510 laptop with Linux MInt 18 with XFCE freshly installed. Near the end of the HPLIP install I receive the following error message:
HP’s printer driver HPLIP won’t fully install:
RE-CHECKING DEPENDENCIES
————————
error: A required dependency ‘libtool (libtool – Library building support services)’ is still missing.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency.
error: Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.
How do I "manually install" this dependency and continue the HPLIP install? The printer will print with the usb cable attached but I cannot print or scan wirelessly. The hp-setup 192.168.1.117 command won't work either....

Thanks.
apt-get install libtool-bin
This worked. Now HPLIP installs fine. Maybe the problem is in hplip-3.16.7.run. You may want to check it...

I can offer the following:
Whether it means anything or not, Linux Mint V18 is not listed as supported; there are listings for Linux Mint 17 - 17.3 in the Wizard.
HP Linux Imaging and Printing > Download HPLIP
Installation Wizard / Download Page
Hints about that dependency are abundant, including the following resources:
libtool installed but not found in /usr/bin
libtool installed but not on path after installation
You may have better luck tracking this on your Distro, say at the Mint forum.
Example (yours?):
Trouble installing HPLIP for HP3521 printer
Once you have installed libtool (or verified the file set exists):
- Link the file to the location where it is (apparently) missing
- Try installing as root
Good Luck.
