Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

The 2 3/4 X 6 inch paper size is not available in the paper size list. Using any other choice from the list results in a paper size error message on the printer screen.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Create a custom paper size directly from the printer properties menu.

  1. Load the custom-size paper into the paper input tray.

  2. Open the item you want to print.

  3. Click File, and then click Print.

  4. In the Print window, click Preferences, Properties, or Printer Properties.

  5. Click the Paper/Quality tab, and then click Custom.

    NOTE:

If you do not see a Custom button on the Paper/Quality tab of the printer properties window, skip to the section to Create custom paper sizes from Devices and Printers.

  6. In the Custom Paper Size window, click New.

  7. Type a name for your custom paper size, adjust the width and height to your preference, and then click OK.

    NOTE:

To change the dimensions to metric, click Millimeters.

Your custom paper size is now saved. You can select this custom paper size in the future and edit it if needed.

  8. Click OK, click the Paper Size drop-down menu, and then scroll down and select your custom paper size.

  9. Make any other preference changes if necessary, and then click OK.

    NOTE:

Supported paper sizes vary by printer. If you input custom dimensions that your printer does not support, the new custom paper size does not display when you attempt to print. Check the printer specifications for your printer for more information on supported paper sizes.

  10. Click OK or Print to print the document.

Also, you can find the paper types, sizes supported by your Printer under the "paper-handling" section of this document: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-6970-all-in-one-printer-series/8289585/model/1...

The 6978 properties do not have a custom paper size option. The link you gave says the custom papers size must be at least 3.5 inches wide and at least 5 inches long. A check blank does not meet these requirement. Was hoping for a work around.

Thanks so much for suggesting.

What is the application you're using to print these checks?

I have tried Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and I have tried Avery Design and Print. On the printers I used before this 6978 (HP Officjet 6500A, and HP Officejet Pro 8610), I had no prblems, so I am dissapointed by the 6978. If you can point me to an app that works, I will love you forever.

I mam searching for a similar if not the same problem - my OfficeJet Pro 6970 will not when changing the layout>paper size in a Word document.

I thought this to be a Microsoft Office glitch as there has for a s long as I can recall always been a huge list of practical every paper size available to me on all previous versions (I am currently using Office 365) of Word, Excel etc.,. However, MS Forums are sometimes confusing but are adamant in places that this is to do with printer drivers.  I don't know, I am not a techie so I looked around and then a chum advised me to go to Print & change the printer from the default one above to PDF and hey like magic it shows all those paper sizes I was looking for.

So I thought  my workaround therefore was to first open a new document in word and before you do anything go and change that print setting to PDF, then save it with a file name and then start work on that document after you have changed the paper size in layout in Word. And whilst this works and a spend time typing out what I want, I find that when I hit print, I get an error message and find it has been saved as a custom size and not recognised.
